Tom Barley began his working career with an enlistment in the United States Air Force as an intelligence analyst at the tail end of the Korean War and the early years of the Cold War. After an honorable discharge from the Air Force and with help from the GI Bill, he started his college education at Rochester Institute of Technology earning a B.S. degree in Industrial Administration and Business. Subsequently he earned an M.B.A. in Marketing Management and Economics from Iona College under scholarship as a Teaching Assistant.

Finishing graduate school, he entered Eastman Kodak Company as an Economic and Market Analyst, tracking economic and market data for motion picture and education product markets. Within a few years, Barley was offered the Directorship of Market Research and Media Planning for the upstate New York office of Young & Rubicam Advertising eventually earning a seat as Vice President. A Y&R client, Xerox Corporation, asked Barley to serve as a low volume marketing and sales executive at (what was then) corporate headquarters in Rochester, NY. In this position Barley was promoted to a corporate officer position.

Retiring from Xerox Corporation, Barley reinvented his career by becoming a university professor and entering his Ph.D. program at Cornell University at Ithaca New York. When the Ph.D. program was completed, Barley went on to enjoy over a thirty five year teaching career serving such universities as Syracuse, West Virginia and Pittsburgh. During his teaching career Barley won several university teaching awards and has been published in many scholarly journals. In tandem to the teaching career, Barley successfully founded and managed a consulting company offering marketing consulting, leadership training and coaching for more than thirty five years. The firm was sold in 2003 and sustained a name change at that time. Barley earned the Registered Corporate Coach (RCC) certification in 2019 and a Daniel Goleman Emotional Intelligence Certification in 2020 to better serve his coaching clients.

Finally it is noteworthy that Barley retired from university teaching in 2006 but failed retirement miserably. So he accepted a position teaching at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University for the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. After the closure of the Embry-Riddle Dayton campus, he was asked to serve as Executive-in-Residence and adjunct professor at the University of Cincinnati-Claremont. He continued to serve as an independent contracting consultant in leadership training and executive coaching culminating in the current partnership with Wade Dickerson.
